Brookline borders six neighborhoods of Boston – Brighton, Fenway, Allston, Mission Hill, Jamaica Plain, and West Roxbury – but it is a town unto itself, and is even in a different county from Boston (Brookline is in Norfolk County, and Boston is in Suffolk County)! Throughout its history, Brookline has resisted annexation from Boston, and is now geographically separated from the rest of Norfolk county as a result of neighboring communities having joined with the City of Boston.

With a population of just over 58,000 residents, Brookline is the most populous Town (as opposed to a City) in Massachusetts.  While lush and verdant, Brookline is densely populated in its 6.8 square miles. Commuting into Boston is a breeze – the C and D Green Line trolleys run through the city along with multiple MBTA bus routes. Brookline itself is quite walkable, with plenty of shopping, dining, and parks to enjoy.

And the residents of Brookline are smart!  Over 14% of the population hold doctorate degrees, the highest percentage in the United States.  Many of these degree holders work for esteemed educational institutions such as Harvard Medical School and Boston University.

  • Brookline Village – the historic center of the town that includes Town Hall the public library, many of Brookline’s local shops and restaurants, and outdoor spaces such as Linden Park and Emerson Garden.
  • Buttonwood Village – a compact section of Brookline sandwiched between Larz Anderson Park and The Country Club in Chestnut Hill featuring tree-lined streets and a variety of housing types.
  • Chestnut Hill, technically in three different counties (Suffolk, Middlesex, and in Brookline’s portion, Norfolk), which also extends into Newton and the Boston neighborhoods of West Roxbury and Brighton
  • Fisher Hill is located just south of Cleveland Circle in Boston, which abuts Brookline and is popular among students among the many schools within a Green Line ride away, such as Boston College and Boston University. The Reservoir T Stop is just a block south, and the entire area is lively with young professionals and families taking advantage of the close proximity to amenities and the outdoor spaces at Cassidy Playground, nearby recreation facilities, and the new, award-winning Fisher Hill Reservoir Park. The tree-lined streets, hilly terrain, and larger property lots make this a desirable area of Brookline.
  • Coolidge Corner, another commercial and cultural hub located at the intersection of Harvard and Beacon Streets. Here, you will find many restaurants, independent shops, and the Coolidge Corner theatre. Coolidge Corner is extremely pedestrian and bike-friendly, and the majority of the housing units are found in multi-family brick rowhouses and taller apartment and condo buildings.
  • Walking through the Salisbury Road – Corey Farm area of Brookline, just north of Beacon Street, will take you down quiet streets with beautiful yards and a variety of architectural types, such as Queen Anne, Shingle, and Colonial Revival dwellings. Continue northeast to Corey Hill past a number of single family homes and multi-family condo buildings to the scenic overview of Boston and Cambridge from Corey Hill Park and Playground, tucked away amid trees and chirping birds.
  • The Longwood and Cottage Farm residential districts in Eastern Brookline listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of the stately homes were built in the late 1800s and feature romantic English country style cottages across 119 acres bisected by Beacon Street. Walking through both neighborhoods will take you into another world just minutes from the hustle of Boston, surrounded by sophisticated homes designed in the Georgian Revival, Gothic Revival, Mansard, and Queen Anne architectural styles. Longwood is located across the Muddy River from the Longwood Medical and Academic Area in Boston.
  • JFK Crossing and North Brookline is a great mix of urban and suburban styles, located on Harvard Street between Naples Street and Verndale Street close to Coolidge Corner. Here in North Brookline is where President John F. Kennedy grew up at 83 Beals Street. Now, the Kennedy home is a National Historic Site and is open for tours.
  • Pill Hill is located in southeast Brookline near Brookline Village, and boasts gorgeous views and lovely landscaping. Aptly named by its high population of doctors and hospital employees for live there, Pill Hill is a quaint residential neighborhood near Longwood Medical Center. Most homes were built in the late 19th centuty / early 20th century, featuring Colonial Revival, Victorian, English Cottage, Mansard, and Greek Revival architecture.
  • South Brookline and Putterham are serene parts on the southern edge of Brookline near Chestnut Hill, featuring rolling hills and two golf courses (one public – Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course, and one very private – The Country Club – who finally admitted Tom Brady in 2017, two years after his application!)
  • St. Mary’s sites on the Eastern edge of Brookline near Kenmore Square, Landmark Center, Boston University, and the Emerald Necklace. Here, you will find a mix of shops, restaurants, and multi-unit homes, such as the many brownstones, townhouses, and apartment buildings along Beacon Street.
  • The Heights (just west of Washington Square)
  • Washington Square sits at the bottom of two of Brookline’s largest hills – Aspinwall and Corey Hills – and is one of Brookline’s most central locations at the intersection of Beacon Street and Washington Street. Here you will discover a multitude of restaurants and shops in Washington Square’s aesthetic appeal and charming atmosphere – the right mix of vibrant activity and comfort. Many residents of Washington Square live in brownstones and apartment buildings, both new and old.
