With the typically busy spring and summer real estate markets upon us here in Boston, we have a new challenge this year that has nothing to do with increased competition, mortgage financing, or negotiating terms of a sale – COVID-19 and how to keep your home clean and virus-free. Although we spent much of March and April in quarantine and under stay-at-home orders, the real estate market continues on. Buyers had been planning to hit the Open House circuit and sellers had planned on listing their properties – unchanged with their goals but taking a different approach.
For sellers, many of your showings these days might be over Zoom, Factime, or via pre-recorded video tours with the increased reliance on virtual tours and with social distancing measures still in place. But for those situations where buyers will want to examine your property in person, whether during the marketing process, during inspection, or at the final walk-through, you will need to take extra precautions to keep your home clean and virus-free in order to protect all stakeholders – your family, yourself, your buyer, and all real estate agents.
To help you prepare for selling your home during COVID-19, here are a few ways that you can keep your home clean and virus-free.
CLEAN AND DISINFECT HIGH-TOUCH SURFACES
It will be impossible to keep every inch of your home 100% clean all of the time. To keep COVID-19 out of your home, focus on some of the common high-touch surfaces.
- Front Door Knob and Knocker
- All Inside Door Handles
- Light Switches
- Hard-backed chairs
- Drawer Pulls
- Handles on Appliances
- Touch screens
- Remote controls
KILL GERMS BEFORE THEY ENTER YOUR HOME
Leave cleaning supplies at your front door and disinfect everything before you bring it into the house – packages, clothing, mail, groceries, bags.
When people are about to enter your home, it is not too much to ask them to remove their shoes at your front door. COVID-19 can spread through the soles of shoes.
WASH YOUR HANDS IMMEDIATELY
Every time you walk into your house, whether coming home from work, from the grocery store, or from just having walked the dog, make it a habit to wash your hands immediately. Soap and water kill COVID-19.
DISINFECT YOUR PHONE, WALLET, AND KEYS
When you head out the door, you know that check that you do every time – phone, wallet, keys. Probably the three most important items you you carry with you daily. COVID-19 can linger on these surfaces. Clean each of them with a disinfecting wipe or Lysol spray.
The COVID-19 pandemic will require you to clean and disinfect more than you’re used to. With proper hygiene and the right cleaning routines, you can take steps to protect yourself and your family—and lower your chances of bringing COVID-19 and any unwanted germs into the home, especially if you are planning to sell your home during the health crisis.
