That is, after you make an offer, you need to respond to the counteroffer (which is very common) as soon as possible. Most counteroffers have expiration times, so this is a pretty standard reaction.

If you delay your response, you allow time for another buyer to jump in with a better offer and thus create a bidding war. And when that happens, you lose a great deal of your negotiating leverage.
